Brainstorming Some Ideas

Hi everyone, For this week, my focus has been on brainstorming the social justice topics that I can connect with specific curriculum expectations of the grade 9 math curriculum . After utilizing and looking more in depth to the resources that I found last week, I have come up with the following ideas: 1. Housing costs/trends -> C3.1, B3.5, A2, B1.1 2. Public heath statistics of different countries-> C3.1, B3.5, A2 3. Crimes and racial profiling -> C3.1, B3.5, A2 4. Passion project on a social justice topic (student choice -> D2.2, D2.3, D2.4, A2 5. Women in STEM/Pay inequality -> A2, F1.1, F1.4 One thing that I have been reading about is how important math journaling and reflection are to help students consolidate and connect the content with the real world. I feel like that with math, I can show students statistics, have them graph and compare numbers so they can recognize the problems in society. With all of the lessons/activities I will look to create, journali...

Finding the Resources

Hi everyone, For this week, my focus has been trying to find some rich resources that I can use to help integrate social justice issues in my grade 9 math lessons.  I have been able to find some (see blow). I have also included a brief description for them, incase you yourself would like to learn more too! My Resources (click the bolded words to open the resource): 1. This resource  (Pearson) has many different ideas on multiple social justice issues and how they can be incorporated in math classes. A lot of the ideas in this article are relating to comparing rates and statistics of different issues.  2. This resource  has made me think about the student's role in integrating social justice in the math classroom, and how I can promote inquiry based learning. I can potentially allow students to find a social justice issue they are passionate about and have them relate it to math and share with the class! 3. This book  that I found on the internet (can be pu...

Welcome!

Hi everyone! Welcome to my Genius Hour math edition site! I am so excited to start exploring my topic and uncovering how I can integrate more social justice topics/issues into my math classroom! My goals: Learn more about about math relates to social justice topics Develop a catalogue of different questions/lessons to teach to my students involving math and social justice topics Feel more comfortable exploring social justice issues and connecting them to math Being able to develop activities/lessons relating to at least 3 different math topics from the Ontario Math Curriculum How I will measure my progress: I am hoping to measure my progress by being able to create different math activities/lessons to use in my classroom (I will post these to my blog and hopefully have a toolbox of lessons to pull from, by the end). I will know I am progressing when I am able to connect the curriculum to social justice topics. I will also measure my progress with self reflections and monitoring where m...
