Brainstorming Some Ideas

 Hi everyone,

For this week, my focus has been on brainstorming the social justice topics that I can connect with specific curriculum expectations of the grade 9 math curriculum.

After utilizing and looking more in depth to the resources that I found last week, I have come up with the following ideas:

1. Housing costs/trends -> C3.1, B3.5, A2, B1.1

2. Public heath statistics of different countries-> C3.1, B3.5, A2

3. Crimes and racial profiling -> C3.1, B3.5, A2

4. Passion project on a social justice topic (student choice -> D2.2, D2.3, D2.4, A2

5. Women in STEM/Pay inequality -> A2, F1.1, F1.4

One thing that I have been reading about is how important math journaling and reflection are to help students consolidate and connect the content with the real world. I feel like that with math, I can show students statistics, have them graph and compare numbers so they can recognize the problems in society. With all of the lessons/activities I will look to create, journaling/reflection will definitely be a component! You can find more information here!

Today in class, we also talked about 3 Act Math. This is the idea of storytelling through solving math problems. I think this is a tool I can use to help bring real world social justice issues to light. I can definitely see myself using this type of task when creating my resource bank!

As I was trying to connect different social justice topics to the math curriculum, I noticed that a lot of the topics fall under data, number sense and algebra. My goal is to develop as many activities/lessons as possible that touch on multiple expectations. So, for next week I am going to look and research more ideas on how I can connect more of these topics to more of the grade 9 curriculum!

Stay tuned!
