Finding the Resources

 Hi everyone,

For this week, my focus has been trying to find some rich resources that I can use to help integrate social justice issues in my grade 9 math lessons.

I have been able to find some (see blow). I have also included a brief description for them, incase you yourself would like to learn more too!

My Resources (click the bolded words to open the resource):

1. This resource (Pearson) has many different ideas on multiple social justice issues and how they can be incorporated in math classes. A lot of the ideas in this article are relating to comparing rates and statistics of different issues.

2. This resource has made me think about the student's role in integrating social justice in the math classroom, and how I can promote inquiry based learning. I can potentially allow students to find a social justice issue they are passionate about and have them relate it to math and share with the class!

3. This book that I found on the internet (can be purchased on Amazon) is a book of lessons relating to social justice. I think this is one that I might purchase- stay tuned!

4. This article (education week) talks about the importance of integrating social justice issues in math classes and lists some ways that teachers have done it. This article can serve motivation for me as I continue to dive deeper in the idea of incorporating social justice and math.

5. This guide has given me some ideas to consider. This guide describes some ideas on how to involve the students in reflection, discussions, etc. while also following the math curriculum.

I have also included the grade 9 math curriculum here. Moving forward, I am going to look into these resources and see how I can connect them to the overall and specific expectations in the new grade 9 curriculum.

Based off of my research here are my ideas moving forward:

  • Comparing rates
  • Graphing
  • Looking at statistics
  • Using math journaling to prompt reflection
  • Passion projects/inquiry based
I know that as I continue to work on this project, more and more ideas will present themselves.

I can't wait to share all my learning with you all!

Stay tuned for more!

Until next time,

Sydney
